Street Reflections

Walking in the city or anywhere for that matter after a nice rainstorm can leave many reflections on the ground and other things. Puddles can offer many depths to ones photography. I should get out more during rain or right after to see what I can see. This cobble stoned alley way was already interesting but seeing some reflections in the stone was more.

Cigar Factory

This is one of those photo walks that I set up with a guy that was offering some 200 rolls of expired film to shoot. Walking in the bottom in Richmond was where we decided to go to. The guy got a great deal a simple $5 for the 200 rolls including 35mm, 120mm and some sheet film. I grabbed some black and white film, Kodak BW400cn Film, since if it was expired maybe it wouldn’t look to bad. We stopped at the Cigar Factory there were the owner was sitting outside enjoying one of their many cigars. He was friendly and offered to step inside the take some shots. Today I used a Nikon FM2n with a 50mm 1.4 lens. The owner sitting outside…88590005Small place but had a nice glass shelf with boxes of cigars, a chalk board like wall with writing and nice seats to sit and enjoy a cigar.

I do not smoke but the man was nice enough to offer some more photographic opportunity so I step on in. Thanks for looking.

Bridge at Imamiya-jinja

Imamiya-jinja is a shrine in northern Kyoto that is probably overlooked a lot by tourists. It is not as amazing I guess as most of the other sites in the city and if you are pressed with time then it is completely understandable. It is a shrine that is very close to Daitoku-ji temple complex which should be a must for most tourist so it isn’t that far out of the way to take a look. It has been around since 1001 so a thousand years! It protects against epidemics and was built at  a time when there was one going around Kyoto. On one side of the bridge is the east gate to the shrine where there are two restaurants that offer roasted rice cakes and have been in business since the year 1001 roughly. I believe they are the oldest business that is still running in the world. That’s a long time.

My time at the Beach

I didn’t get much time at he beach this year. I stopped by a few times during work but only got two weekends of actual vacation there. The last time I went it was during a storm that was coming up the coast and causing coastal flooding so I wouldn’t have called that a “real” beach day. The one weekend though had great weather and offered some great walks out on the sand. that is when I captured this photo.

Silver Pavilion in Kyoto

The Silver Pavilion as it is called was at one point supposed to be clad in Silver foil just like the Golden pavilion but never got to it. The Silver Pavilion, Ginkaku-ji, (real name Jisho-ji) was built around 1482 by Ashikaga Yoshimasa as a retirement villa. He modeled it after his grandfathers, Golden Pavilion (Kinkakuji), which is why it looks familiar to it and then once he passed it was converted into a temple. the gardens are great and sprawling even up the Higasiyama hills. Great part of the Philosophers walk as the beginning or end. Grab a bike and go!

It was not covered in Silver but you can see the foil on display near the end of  the walk by the store…

The gardens are a pleasure to view as you walk through them with water on two sides. I enjoy looking at the trees and two times I have been there and they were up in them pruning them…

Looking over at the buildings that are not part of the tour but are pretty setting for the gardens indeed…
